Happy #ThrowbackThursday to dancing with Taraf de Caliu in Clejani, Romania 🇷🇴 Join me this weekend at the #DenverTravelShow where I’ll be sharing my #BareFeetDNA experience that has truly been life-changing for me! And next week I head back on the road with my team, @lina_land & @evancarters_party, to film another episode of the #BareFeetSeries for our new #BareFeetDNA season! ❤️ Just thinking about more of these magical experiences through #dance and #music with complete strangers makes me feel alive, and I’m so excited to share where my DNA will take me next! Stay tuned for our @facebook LIVE announcement next week from where our Episode #9 is taking us (*HINT - it will be in a completely new region of the world where I’ve never been yet!! Any guesses?!?) 📷: @evancarters_party It’s not that often that I get to return to a place that I’ve had the honor of visiting and immersing myself through dance and music with the #BareFeetSeries - but I’m so glad to be back in the @guadeloupeislands to continue this #GwadaCarnival adventure. We were here 3 years ago already, and though we were on the island for only a few days on our first trip, being back has such a different feeling: I’ve been reconnecting with so many old friends, dancing and making music with new ones, and truly feeling part of the community here, as if I’ve never left. It is such a privilege to be able to come back, and I am so grateful for that luxury. Merci to the beautiful people of Guadeloupe - you’ve reminded me that the connections made through these Bare Feet adventures are ever-lasting ❤️
📷: @evancarters_party I’m so proud to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth with this special #GwadaCarnival episode in the @guadeloupeislands - learning the mas rhythms and joining the Ash Wednesday March with @akiyogwadafrika was so emotionally powerful for me, and I truly felt connected to this place in a way that I can’t really articulate. Thank you @akiyogwadafrika for letting me make music with you and letting me immerse myself fully in your beautiful culture 🙏❤️ And thank you to @lina_land for capturing this moment and for sharing in the emotions with me once the camera turned off!

Watch the full episode on our Facebook and YouTube channels, link in profile. Episode 4 of our 7-part #GwadaCarnival series in the @guadeloupeislands is LIVE! I join @wakachireband_officiel in the Carnival Parade!! What you see is a beautiful swirl of colors, dance, and energy! What you don’t see is the magical way that this day came together - what happens on almost EVERY #BareFeetSeries shoot is a bit of Lost In Translation, and Carnival in the Guadeloupe Islands was no exception. As it turned out, I didn’t have a costume to wear with the band when it came time to #dance in the Carnival Parade. So the most incredible thing happened - members of the Waka Chire Band started giving me pieces of their own costumes - an arm band here, a piece of gold fabric here, a leg ruffle there that was pinned on as a skirt, and so on - and voila, I was covered in gold, ready to join the band! I’ll never forget this moment, thank you especially to Elodie Cairo, lead dancer, who taught me the full routine only a few hours prior! 💛

#NYTTravelShow I remember every destination I visit not necessarily by its beautiful vistas but by its rhythms, the movements that the people teach me, and the music that rings in my ears! The @guadeloupeislands is no different – if anything, the #music and #dance culture here is one of the strongest I have ever experienced – with dancers and musicians in the streets, all day everyday.

I went to visit @akademiduka to learn Gwoka, the improvisational dance and music where both the drummer and the dancer are having a conversation together without words. Watch this full video on our YouTube or Facebook Channels (link in bio), and see why I fell in love with the beautiful rhythms of the Guadeloupe Islands! #GwadaCarnival As you all know, I can’t just sit and watch while everyone else is making music. So, per usual, I asked if @maskakle would teach me to play the Chacha (prounounced Sha-Sha) – and of course, they were more than happy to let me join in. It’s a simple instrument (a dried calabash filled with grains), but it takes a lot of muscle and heart to play, especially for the hours of marching that goes on during #Carnival in the @guadeloupeislands. But it is so meditative, and with every shake, you feel like you are part of something bigger – a little voice that when surrounded by so many becomes a huge roar! #GwadaCarnival *******************

I’m sharing the celebrations leading up to me joining The Extraordinary BBlack Cruise and The Carnival Village in a few weeks – this week’s episode is The Pajama Parade, Guadeloupe’s version of J’Ouvert (to open the day). #sponsoredpartnership I make this face when I’m having the time of my life, usually dancing with a complete stranger who has shown me incredible kindness – so needless to say, that is EXCACTLY what is happening during #Carnival celebrations in the @guadeloupeislands! #GwadaCarnival

I’m excited to announce the launch of this 7-part video series, brought to you by The Guadeloupe Islands Tourism, The Extraordinary BBlack Cruise, and @flynorwegian! Check it out the full videos on our @youtube and @Facebook channels! In anticipation of the upcoming BBlack Cruise and The Carnival Village, I’m sharing what this month-long party really means. And to kick off the festivities, I start at Les Marchandes de Basse-Terre, a long-held tradition of venerating the women fruit and vegetable vendors on the island. The Guadeloupe Islands have a strong and beautiful identity that is like no other, and as you’ll see over the next month, I was very lucky to be able to immerse myself fully with the people of this colorful and unique place. Bonne fetes, everyone – I can’t wait for you to see what else we have coming for you!

#sponsoredpartnership Happy #MotivationMonday! We’re starting off this week (and let’s be serious) this YEAR with some serious moves - a new digital series kicks off on YouTube this week, we’re continuing the #BareFeetDNA journey (we are NOT done yet!), and we have some other exciting news that’s in the horizon (nothing I can disclose quite yet...) 💪

I had an amazing chat with a friend yesterday who really helped me put things in perspective - he said, “Mickela, what do you love about your job? What are the things you TRULY enjoy?” My answer: 1. The planning and creative process of the show, coming up with the ideas, reaching out to the dance groups, planning all the travel details - I LOVE THAT! 2. Being on camera - I didn’t realize how much I loved doing it until we started filming this new season of the #BareFeetSeries again. So much time passes by between seasons because of all the planning and prep and fundraising, but I really do have so much fun filming this series! And 3. Meeting and speaking with all of the people who have been touched by this work - I can’t tell you how much I enjoy sharing my story and being honest with the process of creating a #passionproject. And I absolutely adore running into fans, receiving beautiful and heartfelt messages on how Bare Feet has inspired them to travel or dance again or just step out of their comfort zone.

Here we go, 2019!! ✨ 📷: @evancarters_party 2018 has been an incredible year, and as we draw to a close, I just want to say THANK YOU for letting me share this #BareFeetSeries adventure with you all! From filming the new #BareFeetDNA season and sharing this personal journey of self-discovery to yet another @nyemmyawards WIN to living out my dream of being the @danceparadenyc Grand Marshal to sharing my own story on stages across the country to meeting you all in person and sharing a hug together, this truly has been a year of work, love, dance, and above all, joy! The joy I feel from pursuing this project cannot be measured by the overwhelming joy I feel by hitting so many of these milestones along the way. Thank YOU, and thank you, 2018! Wishing you all an incredible close to yet another year with hopes of a prosperous, healthy, and happy 2019! ❤️✨ Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been a little less active on social media than normal. And by normal, I mean the standards set for posting frequently, consistently, and positively for someone who has a presence online and on television and in life in general. This is what being very active on social media really looks like - being isolated in the real world, missing out from interacting with people who are physically near me, not sharing a laugh, not passing a dish to taste, not shaking a hand to learn someone’s name. Don’t get me wrong, I love every one of you who shares what this #BareFeetDNA and #BareFeetSeries journey has meant to you over the last 8 years. And above all, I can’t thank you enough for ALLOWING me to share this journey with you. But until 2019 begins, until the hustle and bustle of constant travel and content creation start anew, I want to remind you that putting your phone down is a very good thing to do in this world too ❤️ Thank you to @shootmytravel for capturing this moment and for its important reminder 🙏 Happy #TravelTuesday! While filming the #BareFeetSeries, my family tends to grow. The #BareFeetCrew is the family that starts the journey with me, who see it through with me from start to finish; our hosts and our guides quickly become family as we work long hours together, working tirelessly to fit everything we need in a limited amount of time; and the people that I dress up with, dance with, and make music with are the family that don’t really have any other choice but to take us in: we are the long-lost relatives that just show up at their door. We may not all share the same blood, but it never fails, we all become one big family every time ❤️ #BareFeetDNA #ExperienceRomania 🇷🇴
I’m pretty lucky to travel the world with a camera crew following me, but what is also pretty incredible are the @shootmytravel photographers that can capture the magical, candid moments like this one from our TV shoot in Puglia, Italy. These genuine connections & smiles are the moments that really remind me why I travel in the first place. And that is exactly why I included Shoot My Travel in my gift guide for 2018! In honor of #GivingTuesday (and the start of the holiday shopping season), I have put together a “Mickela’s Travel Holiday Wish List” of my own that includes #travel essentials that I genuinely use and can’t live without. Go to TravelBareFeet.com for the full list (link in profile)- also included in this list are some incredible companies and organizations that I believe in and support myself, including Shoot My Travel (be sure to use code BAREFEET for $15 OFF your first Shoot My Travel booking)! Happy shopping! My sister is the best - look what came in the mail today!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ #ChristmasCameEarly 🎄 My favorite annual tradition - a #selfie with one of my #travel heroes, Mr. @ricksteveseurope at @ampublictv Fall Marketplace! Thank you, Rick, for the endless love, support, and of course guidance to us all in being better travelers and citizens of this world! ❤️🌎 VOTE. 💪🇺🇸 Happy #BareFeetFriday - the videos we post every week are a beautiful reminder of just how lucky I am to be able to do what I do, go where I go, and meet all of these incredible people along the way. But the best is when I get to share some magic with kids, that is always so special to me and it is 💯 part of the #BareFeetSeries mission. Check out this week’s #fbf video on our @youtube channel or our @facebook page, featuring the beautiful students of the Orang Asli Youth Youth Center outside of Kuala Lumpur, #Malaysia 🇲🇾 Happy #ThrowbackThursday to this magical moment in Kourion, Cyprus 🇨🇾 - embracing the power of our femininity ❤️ #BareFeetDNA #tbt 📷: @shootmytravel
