Wow! What a way to spend a day - literally surrounded by #BareFeetFans - such an honor to have been part of the @hofstrau’s Italian Experience where I was able to share the #dance that represents my family’s culture, the Tarantella Minturnese! 🇮🇹 Thank you to everyone who danced with us, who was kind enough to say hello and let us know how much the #BareFeetSeries means to you, and for all of you supporting this project! Grazie mille - without you, none of this would be possible! ❤️ Happy #motivationmonday! 💪 I absolutely LOVE getting up and speaking to people about my journey, I LOVE sharing as much as I can to help the next #entrepreneur figure out the kinks, and I most of all LOVE being as transparent as possible to share what really goes into making a #passionproject ❤️ Thank you to @tbexevents & @flxwinecountry for letting me lead a #publicity talk (standing room only! 🙌) and for sharing the keynote stage with @oneikatraveller & @flybrother for #myflxtbex. The memories from that day are crystal clear, but I don’t remember too much the months following. I can’t explain it. I remember how beautiful the weather was that day. I remember walking from my job on 42nd St at Casual Corner, turning the corner on Lex and seeing a huge mass of black and grey smoke. It looked like from a movie, like Independence Day or something. It’s strange knowing that 19-year-old sophomores at NYU today were just little babes back then. We were just little babes back then too. This is what being a New Yorker means to me – the diversity, the beauty in its multi-culturalism, the colorful and vibrant energy its music and dance holds! I need to pinch myself every once in a while to remind myself that this is reality - I get to sit on top of the world sometimes and feel so incredibly small, and that is one of the most amazing feelings in the world. But there is a lot of hustle and work and tears and fighting against one’s own fears and working through that little voice that tells you to just give up. That’s also reality. We’re not just making a TV show, we’re having these unforgettable experiences that may or may not make the editing floor, but that doesn’t make them any less valuable. We aren’t just a crew, we are a family - we work together, we sweat together, we cry together, and most importantly, we laugh together. Thank you, @shootmytravel, for capturing this moment and being part of our crazy family. #BareFeetDNA I have to make a confession - every time I dance and make music with strangers, I fall a little bit in love with them. I think it’s because my adrenaline is pumping so much, my endorphins are kicking in, and my heart is truly wide open. And it happens - this brief innamorata, falling in love with a soul that you can’t really communicate with except through the movements of your body and the sounds of the instruments. Needless to say, I was gobsmacked with that love when I met Taraf de Caliu, a țigan band (gypsy, as they call themselves) in the village of Clejani. And what you don’t see in front of us is the family that we immediately became a part of as soon as we arrived - truly a dream come true ❤️ #BareFeetDNA #ExperienceRomania 📷: @evancarters_party Feeling quite at home here in Romania 🇷🇴 That’s the face of someone who just danced her butt off and absolutely LOVED it! The #BareFeetDNA journey continues in this incredibly beautiful Eastern European country - it is also considered culturally connected to The Balkans, so this mixture of cultures in the dances fits my body perfectly (and so does this wool/leather vest!). Multumesc to the Ansamblul Balada Humorului in Bocovina for letting me literally jump right in with them (they made me feel young again, mainly because all of them are half my age 😜 - see me doing the hora with them in our recent Facebook LIVE video). And with such a long history with wine, Georgians also have a long, beautiful tradition with giving toasts. So far, this #BareFeetDNA journey has been nothing short of miraculous - this opportunity to dance my way through my DNA map is eye-opening and inspiring! I’m in the French Basque Country celebrating Le Fetes De Bayonne, dancing down the streets with the puppets of Kilika, a group of volunteer artists who make these magical, mythical characters come alive! Meeting with Sylvia Serena, pioneer in helping bring back the Oriental Dance to the very conservative country of Cyprus, was an eye-opening and liberating experience for me. This ancient dance celebrated women, their bodies, and their power to bring life into this world. I’ll be honest, I felt very vulnerable and somewhat naked when we started filming this segment, but as Sylvia showed me the movements and explained their beautiful origins that she understands (there are so many theories as to where and how Belly Dance and Oriental dance started), I began to feel more comfortable and confident. But one thing is true, this dance is a celebration of us, women, and of course the celebration of life through circles, channeling the energy from Mother Earth to our own bodies. This #BareFeetDNA journey just keeps getting more and more incredible! We’re filming the next episode of the new season, this time discovering my Georgian roots in The Caucuses 🇬🇪 It turns out my DNA comes from Sakartvelo, the name that the people from this country call their own land. And as I learn a little of the language, am greeted with the traditional Georgian hospitality, and am completely impressed by the breathtaking landscape, I keep being reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to take this #BareFeetDNA journey in the first place: the technology to discover this information let alone traveling to these magical places that make up who I am is a dream come true! And of course, it’s the music and #dance that I share with the Kartveli people that make me feel the most connected ❤️ #BareFeetSeries
Filming the new #BareFeetDNA season has been a whirlwind of an adventure so far – it’s been a vigorous and emotional journey for me! My goal is always to pack in my schedule with as much as I can experience with the little time I have in every destination. And packing light is a necessity! We’re in the region of Andalucía in Spain filming another episode for the #BareFeetDNA season, and I got to join the Association of Bell Ringers in Utrera. Ringing the bells may not sound like a glamorous job, but the adrenaline rush you get from the booming sound of the bells and the dangerous jumps of the ringers ON TO the bells (yes, you read that correctly) is addictive. I could see why these men love keeping this tradition alive. And that’s the most important part - this is a tradition. These men volunteer their time - some are doctors, lawyers, musicians, teachers - but all of them have a deep love for the tradition of the Bells in Santiago Tower. And they let me join right in - I was able to ring the main bell - with their direction, I was part of this beautiful process! Muchas gracias, Utrera - I felt completely part of the community! 🇪🇸 It’s been an emotional time for a lot of us lately - days full of feeling helpless, saddened by seeing families torn apart, overwhelmed by all of the bad and hurt happening in the world. But I was reminded of something last night. We’re back on the road, filming more episodes of the new #BareFeetDNA season, and this time we’ve found ourselves in Girona, Catalonia in Spain. I was able to not only witness something so incredible but also feel the powerful emotional connection that building the Human Towers does to you. Standing at the base, building pressure against one another against each other’s bodies - we are listening to one another, feeling which way the tower is swaying. It’s hot, it’s uncomfortable, it’s even a bit claustrophobic. But then you feel this sense of calm and then a feeling of unity. We all don’t know what is happening exactly, but we know we are all in there to support each other, help each other reach that goal, get the youngest member of the group to the very top. Our ultimate goal is the same and each of us plays a very little part but gives such a spectacular ending. This is where we all are right now - it reminds me that though each of us may feel small, we can work together, build our communities and all take steps that will guide us to that ultimate goal of good and right and just. We are all part of something bigger, something that we may not see from up close, but from far away makes such a big impact. That community and that intense emotion - this is what we are feeling and let’s let that take us to a better tomorrow. ❤️ Happy #TravelTuesday! We head back out to start filming again in a few days, and I’m so excited to continue this journey of discovering my DNA roots through dance & music! Where do think we’re headed next?? #BTS Grateful for my Dad and so grateful to be able to celebrate with him this #FathersDay⁠⁠. He’s always been there for us, whether in the audience cheering us on or on the roof building our home. Thank you, Papá, for the constant love and support. ❤️ He and my mom are both immigrants who left everything and came to America with their parents for a better life - their legacy has been the inspiration for my work everyday. Today has been a stark reminder of the children who have been ripped apart from their own families and might not see their fathers or mothers ever again - and all done by our own government.
